![]() ![]() In so many ways, that scary "Twilight Show" from my childhood memory bank reminds me of what is happening on the streets of our country today. Since there was no monster or alien for them to fight-nothing tangible to fear and no explanation-the neighbors on Maple Street turned on each other! Neighbors confront the owner, demanding answers why his car was the only one. When a young boy suggested it was an alien invasion, imaginations ran wild-or as wild as a black and white TV show in the early 60's could be! Then, in an inexplicable and very dramatic moment, a single car starts. By the time darkness fell on Maple Street, fear had taken over big time. No one knew why or what was happening, and all sorts of strange things were happening. Cars would not start people were trapped. We got along, people were always chatting, kids were playing, life was good-until it wasn't!Ī sudden roar, a flash of light and Maple Street lost power. Plus, as the story unfolded, our little neighborhood on Elm and Maple looked very much like the "Twilight Zone" segment. After all, we were the generation taught how hiding under our school desks would save us in a nuclear attack! From the perspective of time, it seems silly, but 60 years ago, the very idea of a Martian or alien invasion from outer space was certainly not beyond the realm of reality. Please understand, it was nothing like an Orson Welles "War of the World" panic moment, but, when Rod Serling said this Twilight episode happened because an invisible enemy arrived on Maple Street, my sisters and I totally freaked out. Now, because our home was on the corner of Elm and Maple Street in the East Texas town of Winnsboro, the show's episode about the monsters on Maple Street made a huge impression my young mind. Then, after his haunting introduction, the signpost for the Twilight Zone would appear, and, for the next few minutes, we prepared to see life being played out in the 5th Dimension. ![]() The right decisions may help you find your way back.wrong decisions often lead to.an eternity trapped forever, beyond what is known to man, in the Twilight Zone." It is that middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, lying between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge where you must tread warily. One of my favorite shows as a kid was the "Twilight Zone." Maybe it is because Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on our travel agency business of 45 years, but, more and more lately, I feel as if I am living in a twilight zone - very much like that 5th Dimension Rod Serling described at the beginning of every TV episode.Īlways in a monotone voice as memorable as "Dragnet's" Joe Friday, Serling would say something to this effect, "The 5th dimension is a place that exists at any moment of time, of space, or of mind when you least expect it.
